BIM Outsourcing to India: A Practical Guide for Overseas Firms
How BIM outsourcing to India works: what to outsource, briefing a team, pilot projects, file standards, time zones, data security and quality.

Architects, MEP consultants and contractors in the Middle East, North America and Australia increasingly use BIM outsourcing to India to add modelling and documentation capacity without adding permanent staff. Done well, it gives you a production team that works to your standards, often overnight. Done badly, it creates models you have to fix yourself. This guide covers what makes the difference.
What to outsource (and what to keep)
The work that outsources best is well-defined production work where your team keeps control of the design:
- Revit modelling of architecture, structure and MEP from your drawings and markups
- MEP and fire protection modelling to LOD 300–400
- Clash detection runs and coordination reports
- Combined services drawings and builder's work drawings
- CAD to BIM and scan to BIM for existing buildings
- Shop drawings, schedules and quantity take-offs
- Revit families and template development
What you should normally keep in-house: client relationships, design decisions, code compliance sign-off and authority submissions. Your engineer of record stays responsible for the design; the outsourced team provides capacity.
Engineers or modellers?
Many BIM outsourcing teams are strong at software but have no design background. That works for simple architectural modelling, but MEP coordination needs people who understand why a system is laid out the way it is: duct pressure, drainage falls, sprinkler spacing, access and maintenance clearances. An engineering-led team resolves more clashes on its own and asks better questions.
How to brief an outsourced BIM team
A good brief saves weeks. Send:
- Scope: which disciplines, levels or zones, and what deliverables (RVT, DWG, PDF, IFC, clash reports).
- Level of development per element category. Our LOD guide explains how to specify it.
- Your standards: BIM Execution Plan, templates, title blocks, families, naming conventions, Revit version.
- Inputs: current drawings or models, markups, specifications and any survey data.
- Schedule: issue dates and review turnaround on your side.
Start with a pilot
Before committing a whole project, give the team a small paid pilot: one floor, one system or one drawing set. Judge it on:
- Accuracy against your inputs
- Whether your standards were followed without reminders
- The quality of the questions asked
- Communication and turnaround
A pilot of one or two weeks tells you more than any portfolio.
Time zones work in your favour
India runs on UTC+5:30:
| Your location | Overlap with India | Typical rhythm |
|---|---|---|
| UAE / Saudi Arabia | Most of the working day | Same-day review and changes |
| Australia (east coast) | Your afternoon, our morning | Calls in your afternoon, work back next morning |
| USA | Little or none | Send markups at close of business, updated model by morning |
The overnight rhythm with the Americas is one of the biggest advantages of offshore BIM production, provided issues are scheduled and markups are clear.
Files, standards and data security
Agree these at the start:
- Where files live: your common data environment (such as Autodesk Construction Cloud or SharePoint) or a shared folder you control
- Software versions: the outsourced team works in your Revit version, not theirs
- NDA and access: who on the team can see your files, and that files stay within the shared environment
- Handover: native files with every issue, so you are never locked in
How BIM outsourcing is priced
Three common models:
- Fixed price per package: for defined scopes such as a building model or a set of CSDs
- Monthly dedicated team: one or more modellers working as an extension of your team
- Hourly: for overflow work and short deadlines
Fixed packages suit first projects; a dedicated team suits firms with a steady pipeline.
Red flags
- No questions about your standards before starting
- Reluctance to do a small pilot
- Models delivered without clash reports or progress notes
- Work only in the vendor's own templates
How we work
IMI Design is an engineering design and BIM consultancy in India. Our engineers design MEP, fire protection, structural and steel buildings as well as model them, and we work with firms in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, the USA and Australia.
